Annuities are a scam. Every life insurance agent I know peddles these products with a passion.

Anyone who sells annuities as part of their retirement options for elderly clients is a dirt bag...plain and simple. Do yourself a favor and leave the estate planning to the juris doctors or those very few financial planners who do nothing that is commission based.

what do you know of that is completely risk free? everything, including annuities, has risks. there are many factors involved when deciding what is best and everything should be weighed out on a case by case basis. anyone looking to buy an annuity should do lots of research and do whatever is right for their specific situation. you make good points but there's just too many random factors involved to say if it's a good idea or not.

CC, I agree with your post. Annuities take advantage of the uninformed. My elderly parents got taken with the promise of double digit returns several years ago. There is also a front end charge (commission) and surrender (commission)...

VA_Voter, thank you for pointing that out. For those wanting a brief description of fixed v. variable, here is a link to a CNN Money article.

http://money.cnn.com/2004/12/03/pf/expert/ask_e...

I'm not venturing into discussing variable annuities because my main focus is on retirees looking for a safe fixed income investment as opposed to putting a portion of their money at risk in a mutual fund. I am glad that you pointed out this distinction.

There are fixed and variable annuities. You have described a fixed annuity. The variable (VA) is generally a limited selection of just average to mediocre mutual funds. Not great but usually not awful. Certainly less advantageous than a knowledgable MF picker. For the risk averse investor there can be advantages to the the VA such as guaranteed minimum income and balances. There are disadvantages such as holding periods and surrender charges.
